As tall as a man, the Cassowary is a striking bird with dangerous claws that can kill in a single swipe. Native to Australia and New Guinea, this bird reminds me of a living dinosaur.
I wanted to capture the regal, almost arrogant quality of the animal. Painting the light like a 18th century portrait, it was a challenge getting the watercolor to describe form, color, and light like an oil painting. Additionally, it was a lesson in patience as there were no shortcuts to be found in capturing the texture of the animal's brilliant waddle.
The original resides in a private collection in London.
